How and why I invented Smart Phone Sleeper

1992 - Beeper Sleeper

My name is Allen  and I invented , "The Smart Phone Sleeper". Never give up on your invention ideas. I never thought that it would take me 20 years to bring the Smart Phone Sleeper to market.

It all started in 1992 and I was on call for my work at night. Back then beepers (pagers) were just starting to become pouplar and I had one for work. One night I left my pager on the other side of the room and missed some calls. I could not let that happen again.

I had a goosneck lamp next to my bed and I tied a red ribbon around it to remind me before I go to bed to "clip" my pager onto the goosneck light stem.

The next morning my son went from a crib to a bed and we got a guard-rail, and as I "installed" the guard-rail with the legs that went between the mattress I had my, "A-Ha" moment. I put two and two together, the goosneck light and the child guard-rail and came up with the "Beeper Sleeper" idea.

I made one for myself out of wood base and a wood dowl for the goosneck. This was pre-internet days and it took me over a year to find the parts I needed to make it.

I ended up making 100 "Beeper Sleeper's" but had no packaging. I sold a few, gave away a few and by the time I was ready,  people stopped using beepers and were starting to use cell phones. My idea went to the closet.

Fast forward 19 years and I wanted to watch a long video clip while I was in bed on my I-pod. My arm was tired of trying to hold up the phone and I had my second,  "A-HA" moment when I pulled out an old Beeper Sleeper from the closet, wraped some rubber bands around the I-pod and the , "Smart Phone Sleeper" was born.
